Closed Bell Terrarium - Restrepia dodsonii (Miniature Orchid)

Restrepia dodsonii is a miniature cloud-forest orchid well known for its compact habit, tolerance of constant humidity, and frequent flowering. In nature it grows in cool, shaded forests with steady moisture, making it exceptionally well suited to a closed bell terrarium, where humidity and temperatures remain even.

Because it prefers indirect light and avoids heat, this setup works particularly well in office environments, where conditions are generally stable and protected from direct sun. Grower references indicate that R. dodsonii tolerates slightly warmer daytime temperatures, often responding with active growth and stronger markings, as long as it experiences a brief evening temperature drop to mimic natural cloud-forest conditions.

A resilient, long-lived orchid that quietly rewards consistency, ideal for shaded desks, studios, and calm workspaces

  • Light

    • Low to medium indirect light (approx. 700–1,400 lux)

    • Bright shade or filtered indoor light

    • No direct sun

Softer light supports consistent growth and regular flowering.

  • Temperature

    • Ideal range: 12–20 °C

    • Tolerable daytime highs: up to 22–24 °C

    • Night drop recommended: 3–6 °C

Prolonged warmth above 24 °C, especially without night cooling, may reduce vigour over time.
