Open Tulip Terrarium – Bulbophyllum auratum, Bromeliad & Rhipsalis cassutha
This open tulip terrarium brings together three epiphytic species that naturally coexist in warm, humid forest environments. Bulbophyllum auratum anchors the composition with its sculptural pseudobulbs and distinctive foliage, while the bromeliad adds structure and water-holding capacity. Cascading Rhipsalis cassutha softens the arrangement, trailing gently over stone and bark.
This combination thrives in an open glass setup where humidity is present but air remains fresh, making it an excellent choice for bright indoor spaces without direct sun.
Why this one is special
This terrarium captures the epiphytic rhythm of a tropical forest, orchids gripping stone, bromeliads holding moisture, and Rhipsalis cascading freely. It’s a living balance of structure and movement, and one of those builds that becomes more expressive as it grows
Light
-
Medium to bright indirect light (approx. 1,000–2,000 lux)
-
Bright shade near an east- or north-facing window
-
No direct sun on the glass
Filtered light supports healthy orchid growth while preventing leaf scorch on the bromeliad and Rhipsalis.
-
Temperature
-
Ideal range: 18–26 °C
-
Short daytime highs up to 28 °C tolerated with good airflow
-
Avoid prolonged exposure below 14 °C
This mix is well suited to stable indoor temperatures typical of homes and offices.
-
Watering
-
All Living Art terrariums include a dedicated drainage layer (clay balls or stone)
-
Water only when the drainage layer appears dry
-
Water level must never rise above the drainage layer
-
Use reverse osmosis or distilled water only
For this build, light but regular watering is key, moist, never saturated.
-
Condensation
-
Minimal condensation is expected in an open tulip terrarium
-
Light morning misting may cause brief condensation, which should clear within hours
-
Persistent fogging indicates excess water or insufficient airflow
-
Humidity & Spraying
-
Bulbophyllum auratum and the bromeliad benefit strongly from regular misting
-
Light spraying 2–4 times per week helps replicate forest humidity
-
Avoid soaking the orchid’s growth point or bromeliad crown
Grower references consistently note improved growth and vigour with gentle, frequent misting.
-
Air Refresh
-
Open design allows natural air exchange
-
No manual airing required, but avoid placing in enclosed cabinets
-
Good airflow helps prevent rot and fungal issues
-
Heat Warning
-
Do not place near heaters, hot windows, or appliances
-
Glass can amplify heat quickly, indirect light only
