Closed Bell Terrarium - Masdevallia infracta (Miniature orchid)

Masdevallia infracta is a true cloud-forest miniature orchid, naturally growing in cool, humid environments with constant air moisture and gentle light. These traits make it exceptionally well suited to a closed bell terrarium, where humidity remains high and conditions change slowly.

Because it prefers stable temperatures and indirect light, this setup performs especially well in office environments. Research and grower observations show that while Masdevallias are classified as cool-growing, M. infracta can tolerate slightly warmer daytime temperatures and may show richer coloration, provided it receives a brief cool drop at night, mimicking its natural habitat.

  • Temperature

    • Ideal range: 10–20 °C

    • Tolerable daytime highs: up to 22–24 °C

    • Important: Night temperatures should drop by at least 3–6 °C

Sustained temperatures above 24 °C, especially without night cooling, can lead to stress and decline — which is why placement away from heat sources is critical.

  • Light

    • Low to medium light (approx. 800–1,500 lux)

    • Bright indirect light only

    • No direct sun
(Comparable to Phalaenopsis shade or deeper forest understory)
