Closed Bell Terrarium - Masdevallia infracta (Miniature orchid)
Masdevallia infracta is a miniature cloud-forest orchid adapted to cool temperatures, constant humidity, and gentle light. In nature it grows in shaded, misty environments with steady moisture and regular temperature drops, conditions that are well replicated in a closed bell terrarium when placed carefully indoors.
The enclosed glass provides the high humidity this species requires while protecting it from drafts and rapid drying. With appropriate placement away from heat, this setup works well in quiet office environments, studios, and shaded interior spaces.
A refined, slow-growing orchid that rewards careful placement and consistency, ideal for shaded desks, studios, and calm indoor environments
Light
-
Low to medium indirect light (approx. 800–1,500 lux)
-
Bright shade or filtered indoor light
-
No direct sun
Too much light or direct sun can stress the plant and cause leaf damage.
-
Temperature
-
Ideal range: 10–20 °C
-
Tolerable daytime highs: up to 22–24 °C
-
Night drop recommended: 3–6 °C
Sustained warmth above 24 °C, especially without evening cooling, may lead to decline over time.
-
Watering
-
Water very sparingly
-
Only add water if the substrate begins to dry and no condensation has been present for several days
-
Excess moisture in small closed terrariums increases the risk of rot
-
Condensation guidance
-
Light condensation on the glass is normal and expected
-
Heavy, persistent condensation indicates excess moisture
-
If needed, briefly open the terrarium to release excess humidity
-
Heat warning
-
Avoid direct sun, heaters, electronics, and warm windows
-
Small glass terrariums can overheat rapidly, even with short sun exposure
-
Air refresh
Recommended: briefly open the terrarium every few weeks to refresh air and maintain balance
